BASIC COURSE ITINERARY
Beginner course (Ganga) • 4Days
Day 1 — Getting Comfortable with Your Kayak
We start the course on land before heading onto the river. You’ll first get familiar with your kayak, paddle, safety equipment and the basic body position needed for efficient paddling. Your instructor will walk you through forward paddling, turning strokes and how small changes in your body position can affect the kayak.
We’ll also spend some time understanding the river itself — how current moves, where calmer water forms and how to recognise an eddy.
Once the basics are clear, we move to a calm section of the Ganga for your first session on the water. The focus is simply on getting comfortable in the kayak, keeping it straight, turning with confidence and understanding how the boat responds.
You’ll also practise a controlled wet exit, so that if you ever capsize, getting out of the kayak becomes a familiar process rather than something to panic about.
Day 2 — Learning to Work with the Current
On Day 2, we leave the flat water behind and start working with gentle moving water. This is where kayaking starts to feel more like river kayaking.
You’ll learn how to enter and leave an eddy, how to cross the current while keeping your kayak on the intended line, and how to use the river’s natural flow instead of fighting against it.
The second part of the day is dedicated to the Eskimo roll. We begin in controlled conditions, giving you plenty of time to understand the movement and build confidence. Your instructor will work with you individually and help you correct the small things that make the difference between an almost-roll and a successful one.
The aim isn’t to rush the roll — it’s to understand it properly and build the confidence to keep working on it.
Day 3 — Your First Real Rapids
By the third day, you’ll already have a better feel for your kayak and the river. Now we start putting those skills together on a Class II section of river.
Before entering each rapid, your instructor will help you understand the line, identify the important features of the water and decide where you need to go. You’ll then paddle the rapid using the strokes, ferrying techniques and eddy skills you’ve been practising.
Safety remains a priority throughout the session, with instructors and safety kayakers positioned to support the group.
Later in the day, we’ll take on a short river journey of around 3–4 km. This gives you the chance to paddle continuously, make your own decisions and experience what it’s like to move through a stretch of river rather than practising one skill at a time.
Where possible, we’ll also review photographs or video from the day so you can see your technique from a different perspective.
Day 4 — Building Independence on the River
The final day is about bringing everything together.
We’ll begin by revisiting the areas where you need a little more practice, with particular attention to the Eskimo roll and handling the kayak in moving water. The goal is to make your responses more natural and less dependent on instructor assistance.
The final river session will take you through a longer Class II section. Instead of following every instruction from the bank, you’ll be encouraged to read the river yourself, choose your line and make decisions as you paddle.
Your instructor will still be there for guidance and safety, but the idea is to give you the feeling of paddling with greater independence.
At the end of the course, we’ll have a final review of your progress, discuss the next steps in your kayaking journey and present your Certificate of Completion.
